Finding your special-amazing-gorgeous wedding dress is a journey. For some brides this journey is short & sweet, for others there are twist & turns, but all of these journeys result in a beautiful gown that is perfect for the bride-to-be. This journey is important step that every bride goes through, its the journey of finding the dress she feels so stunning in that she doesn't want to take it off.
There are many methods to start this journey. Whether its reading magazines, scouring the internet and blogs, or being like Lorelai in Gilmore Girls and spotting a bridal store to just "take a look around because she has the golden ticket (her ring)" Gilmore Girls, Season 6 Episode 11.
These are all great options, but here are the steps I suggest you take.
During a time when you can be with your best friends (who are probably in your bridal party, anyways), grab some coffee or wine and just hangout and look at some Wedding Look Books (can get these from the bridal stores, expos, and sometimes by the wedding magazines) and/or some Wedding Magazines. Have some fun and take a peak to see what you like and dislike when it comes to the style of wedding dresses. Feel free to put sticky notes or put a tab for you to bring in the images of the dresses you liked.
2. Establish a Budget and Find the Bridal Store(s)
The next best step is to establish a budget. This is so important! Depending on the store you choose dresses can start at $300 and they can go up to $20,000 (holy s**t). So set a budget and be realistic on how much you can get for your $$$. A $300 dress will not have as many details as a $2,000 dress. On average most brides spend "between $800 to $2,000 on their dress, which is around 5% of her wedding budget." (WeddingWire)
To find shops in your price range, there are many apps and planners that can help. When I was getting married I loved the Knot's Local Vendor Search Tool.
Some of the vendors that many of my previous brides loved include:
- The Wedding Shoppe
- David's Bridal
- Bella Bridal Boutique
3. Call the Bridal Boutique & Make Your Appointment
Simple as that, just pick up the phone :). If you want, make several appointments at a few different stores, just give each appointment an hour and a half and time to drive to each location.
4. Grab Your BFFs & Head to Your Appointment
It's TIME to try on those dresses! Aren't you excited! Grab your good friends and try to enjoy this time with them.
Once you get to the store, you will meet with your stylist. Remember those dress styles you liked in step one? Well make sure you show your stylist these and let her know what you like, dislike, any concerns and your budget. She will use all this information to choose and find dresses for you.
When your trying on dresses DON'T try a dress on that is higher than your budget and DON'T judge a dress by what it looks like on the hanger, it just may be the dress for you.
Have Fun and Enjoy Your Journey!
